What about the prostate?

Symptoms of enlargement include increased urine frequency more at night. The urine flow may not be normal, it could be slow, and intermittent, and it may take longer for the person to urinate. Sometimes there could be complete obstruction to the flow of urine. Recurrent urinary tract infections may be a common feature. Ultrasound examination of the urinary tract and physical examination of the prostate may help. Most of the patients improve with oral medications. Few require prostate surgery.

What about prostatitis?

Inflammation of the prostate leads to Prostatitis. Symptoms include pain in the lower abdomen, painful micturition, and at times high-grade fever with chills. Urine examination, blood tests for infection, ultrasound or CT scan of the prostate helps. The prostate gland examined by a finger per rectum is painful and warm. A prolonged course of antibiotics may be necessary.

What about prostate cancer?

The symptoms are almost the same as benign prostate enlargement. In many unfortunately the diagnosis is made when the cancer has spread to the bones. The blood PSA test is an important screening test. It may be done annually if you have a family history of cancer. However PSA is done if you are above 40 years and have symptoms of difficulty in passing urine or have blood in urine.

Regular physical activity includes both aerobic and muscle strength training activities. It helps to maintain a healthy weight, improves cardiovascular health and boosts mental well-being.

What about testicular swelling?

They could be benign as in hydrocele, varicocele or spermatocyte. Malignant tumors may secrete hormones like alpha feto proteins and HCG. LDH is non-specific but has prognostic value. Testicular pain, swelling, hardness, and painless testicular mass are suggestive of a primary testicular tumor. Lymphoma and leukemia may be a part of testicular cancer. An undescended testis and thus the scrotal sac remaining empty carries a high risk of testicular cancer.
