When Forgetfulness Becomes A Warning…

Is memory loss a normal part of aging?

A mild slowing of memory is natural with age, but major forgetfulness that affects everyday functioning is not. Such changes often signal an underlying issue like mild cognitive impairment or early dementia and should be medically assessed.

What are the common causes of memory loss in older adults?

Common causes include vitamin B12 deficiency, thyroid disorders, depression, anxiety, side effects of certain medicines, sleep problems, and alcohol overuse. More serious causes include Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, head injury, or stroke.

How can one distinguish normal forgetfulness from dementia?

Occasional forgetfulness that doesn’t disrupt daily life is generally normal. In dementia, memory loss is persistent and progressive – people forget recent events completely, get confused about time or place, and may struggle with routine tasks or decision-making

How can families support someone with memory loss?

Provide a calm and structured environment, label important items, keep a consistent daily routine, and encourage physical and mental activity. Family patience, reassurance, and regular follow-up visits make a big difference

What are the early warning signs of dementia?

Repeatedly asking the same questions, forgetting familiar names or routes, misplacing things frequently, neglecting hygiene, showing poor judgment, or sudden mood and personality changes are early signs that warrant medical evaluation.

What investigations are done to find the cause?

Blood tests for vitamin B12, thyroid function, and general health are essential. Brain scans, such as MRI or CT,  can detect strokes or shrinkage. Doctors may also use simple memory tests like the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) to assess cognitive function.
