Facts you need to know about Magnesium

What is magnesium, and why is it important for our bodies?

Magnesium is a vital mineral involved in over 300 biochemical reactions in the body. It plays a key role in muscle contraction, nerve transmission, blood pressure regulation, bone health, and energy production.

What are common sources of magnesium in our diet?

Rich sources include leafy green vegetables (like spinach), nuts and seeds, whole grains, legumes, avocados, dark chocolate, and mineral water.

What happens if you have low magnesium levels?

Low magnesium (hypomagnesemia) can cause muscle cramps, fatigue, irritability, numbness, arrhythmias, and in severe cases, seizures. It may also worsen diabetes and high blood pressure.

Who is at risk for magnesium deficiency?

Risk groups include those with Crohn’s disease, the elderly, alcoholics, people on medications like diuretics, and individuals with type 2 diabetes, all of whom may face increased nutrient needs.

Does magnesium help in sleep and anxiety?

Yes, some studies suggest magnesium may improve sleep quality and reduce mild anxiety by regulating GABA, a calming neurotransmitter.

However, it’s not a replacement for medical therapy in serious psychiatric conditions.

Is magnesium beneficial in treating heart disease?

Magnesium helps maintain a normal heart rhythm and is useful in treating certain arrhythmias, such as torsades de pointes. It may also modestly reduce blood pressure, but is not a primary treatment for heart disease.

Can magnesium supplements help with diabetes?

Magnesium plays a role in insulin sensitivity. Deficiency is common in type 2 diabetes, and supplementation may improve blood sugar control in patients, especially if they are deficient.
