What is a blood clot in the lungs?
A blood clot in the lungs is called a Pulmonary Embolism (PE). It usually occurs when a clot forms in the deep veins of the legs (Deep Vein Thrombosis or DVT) and travels to the lungs, blocking blood flow.
Is pulmonary embolism dangerous?
Yes. It can be life-threatening if not diagnosed and treated early. Large clots can reduce oxygen levels and strain the heart.
What are the 3 common symptoms?
Symptoms may include: Sudden breathlessness, chest pain (often worse on deep breathing), rapid heartbeat, cough, sometimes with blood, anxiety or sweating, Dizziness or fainting. Some patients may only have mild symptoms.
What causes blood clots to form?
Common causes include: Prolonged bed rest, long flights or travel, major surgery, cancer, pregnancy, obesity, smoking, oral contraceptive pills, previous clotting history
